Zimbabwe possesses world-class mineral deposits, particularly in platinum and chrome, which drive a massive demand for calcined coke in smelting processes. However, the local industry often faces challenges with material consistency, necessitating the import of high-grade processed carbon to maintain furnace efficiency.
The climatic conditions of the region, characterized by distinct wet and dry seasons, impact the storage and handling of petroleum coking derivatives. Moisture control is critical to prevent the degradation of electrical properties in carbon anodes used in local aluminum and ferrochrome production.
Currently, there is a strategic shift toward adopting graphite petroleum coke to replace lower-grade alternatives. This transition is driven by the need to reduce energy consumption in electric arc furnaces (EAF), aligning with Zimbabwe's industrial modernization goals.
